Happy New Year! This is the first weekend of the new year and decade and everyone is in the midst of making their new year’s resolutions. While others focus on getting to the gym, being nicer to others and all those promises you know you will never keep, we are focusing on one resolution we feel like everyone can actually get behind: keeping up with the trends and watching more movies and shows on streaming, of course! And your favorite streaming services are helping you out; whether you subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon Prime Video or more, there are a plethora of new movies and shows coming out this weekend to make sure you keep your promise.

This weekend there are a bunch of big titles to help you recover from your New Year’s festivities. Despite an ongoing Twitter campaign to keep the show alive, the third and final season of Anne with an E is now available on Netflix. Based on the iconic novel “Anne of Green Gables,” this drama series follows the coming-of-age story of a spunky orphan as she finds her way in the world living with a spinster and her brother. In season 3, we follow Anne as she turns 16, now on the brink of womanhood, and experiences love, and teenage angst for the first time. And once you have had your drama fix, head over to Prime Video to catch the latest stand-up comedy special (yes, you read that correctly): Ilana Glazer: The Planet is Burning. Glazer is fresh off her amazing series and has hit the road as a stand-up comic. If you loved her in Broad City, you will adore her as herself!

HBO is coming out with not one, but two weekend movies: Tolkien and The Aftermath. Starring Nicholas Hoult, Tolkien is the biographical drama about the underratedly-extraordinary life of author J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of the “Lord of the Rings” book series. The Aftermath is another book-related film that follows a British colonel and his wife who must rebuild a shattered Hamburg post-WWII. But when they discover that their housemates are in fact a German family (or what remains of them), tensions and drama lead to a mini-war inside the home.

Anne with an E: Final Season

Get ready to say goodbye to the lady of Green Gables, because the third and final season of Anne with an E is now out on Netflix. From the trials and tribulations of young love to more serious topics like her birth parents and gender inequality, Anne with an E is sure to provide a finale to remember. And maybe, if the Twitter campaign #SaveAnneWithAnE pulls it off, the growing fan base will have another season to follow it!

This funny broad covers topics ranging from relationships, life as a stoner adult and even Naziism in this hour-long stand-up set. Goodbye Ilana Wexler anymore, because in The Planet is Burning, Ilana Glazer shows us how funny she truly is.

Tolkien

Tolkien is the biographical drama about J.R.R. Tolkien: the genius mind behind iconic novels like ‘The Hobbit,’ ‘Lord of the Rings,’ and many more. Starring Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies) and Lily Collins (Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile), this film follows Tolkien (Hoult) from his young adult years as he gets an education and makes friends and artistic alliances. But when WWI breaks out, the young literary must make some very difficult decisions that will forever affect his path and the future of his forged fellowship. How’s that for an origin story?
