The 7 Best Golden Globes Moments of 2020

The 2020 Golden Globes bucked the recent awards show trend of going without a host — and Ricky Gervais seized the opportunity to take everyone in the audience to task, including his employers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The show began with Gervais swilling a beer before launching into a monologue that called out Apple for running sweatshops, blasted the woke elite for their chummy relationship to Jeffrey Epstein, and noted that Hollywood’s greed runs so deep that “if ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent.” The audience in attendance spent most of those 5 or 6 minutes gasping in disbelief, a rarity for the normally chummy awards circuit, and set the tone for an entertaining evening.

The Golden Globes remain, hands down, the best awards show of them all. They’re the drunkest awards, of course, but they’re also the most unpredictable. Tonight’s event featured surprise wins (Ramy Youssef, Awkwafina), moving speeches (Michelle Williams, Tom Hanks), superstar celebs (Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt), and more highlights than we could have possibly counted. But, naturally, we tried! Here are some of our favorite moments from the Golden Globes 2020.

Ricky Gervais didn’t hold back at the 2020 Golden Globes. The comedian with a penchant for causing controversy took shots at Apple, “woke” celebrities, and the notorious pedophile and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. He even poked fun at Hollywood’s hypocrisy when it came to signing on to projects, noting that “if ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent.”

Gervais’ mood never improved, either. He closed the show in memorable fashion, telling the audience to “get drunk, take your drugs, and f*** off.”

Michelle Williams won the 2020 Golden Globe awards in more ways than one: She took home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for Fosse/Verdon, and she brought the house down with a powerful speech about a woman’s right to choose.

Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon dazzled the audience at the 2020 Golden Globes with a hilarious and heartfelt tribute to Ellen DeGeneres, the 2020 recipient of the Carol Burnett Award for Excellence in Television. McKinnon used the opportunity to talk about the comic and trailblazer’s influence on her own life, noting that DeGeneres’s brave decision to come out as gay in public and on her sitcom helped her in her youth. “If I hadn’t seen her on TV, I would have thought ‘I could never be on TV. They don’t let LGBT people be on TV.’ And more than that, I would have gone on thinking that I was an alien and that I maybe didn’t have a right to be here,” McKinnon said, holding back tears.

The brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge might have outdone herself when she gave President Barack Obama a rather cheeky shout out at the 2020 Golden Globes. Upon accepting the award for Best Comedy for Season 2 of Fleabag, Waller-Bridge mischievously said, “Personally I would also like to thank Obama for putting us on his list, and as some of you may know, he’s always been on mine.” The line got a huge amount of laughter, and for those at home who might have been lost, Waller-Bridge quickly added, “And if you don’t get that joke, please watch Season 1 of Fleabag really really quickly!”

Formalwear can get uncomfortable, stuffy even, especially when you’re packed into a crowded auditorium for hours on end enduring all the heat coming off of a scorching hot monologue. In that case, you might wanna cool off. And if you’re Jason Momoa, that means giving every single viewer an unexpected–but very welcome–ticket to the gun show.

Tim Allen Puts His Foot In His Mouth Yet Again

Well that didn’t take long. It only took Tim Allen five seconds to make a transphobic joke and a joke about PC culture at the 2020 Golden Globes. The best part? He did it all a solid hour and a half before the awards show even began. (In the show itself, his co-presenter Lauren Graham nearly died from embarrassment when Allen went off-script and told a joke that completely bombed.)
