Joy Behar Praises Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes Monologue: “He Was Funny”

The audience at the 2020 Golden Globes may not have enjoyed Ricky Gervais‘ opening monologue, but the comedian has a few fans at The View. On Monday, the co-hosts discussed Gervais’ fifth-time hosting stint, and despite the negative reaction from many viewers (not to mention Tom Hanks), the panel agreed that it was “hilarious.” Even Joy Behar, a notoriously tough critic, praised his controversial set, saying, “I thought he was funny.”

Gervais’ Golden Globes monologue was anything but surprising: for about seven minutes, he savagely roasted the “woke” attendees for their previous connections to Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein and their ignorance about working for corporations like Apple “that make sweatshops in China.” Said Gervais, “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world.”

Obviously, the winners ignored Gervais’ whining, and even more obviously, the women of The View had plenty to say about it come Monday morning. “Our friend Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes for the fifth time last night, and true to form, he roasted the A-list audience about everything from political views to their dating habits,” said moderator Whoopi Goldberg, before playing a clip of Gervais ripping Leonardo DiCaprio (one of his better jokes of the night).

The co-hosts laughed, and Behar insisted that she liked the opening monologue. “He was funny,” she said. “I thought he was funny.” Huntsman echoed that sentiment, saying, “This must have been his last time hosting because he was like, ‘I’m just going to put it all out there.’ And it was hilarious!”

“A lot of people were like, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I should laugh or if I should cringe,'” continued Huntsman. “But I found it funny.”

Unfortunately, Sunny Hostin pivoted the conversation towards Golden Globes fashion, so we never got to hear Meghan McCain’s opinion about Ricky Gervais’ monologue. But the conservative firebrand did have one Golden Globes takeaway: “Justice for Adam Sandler and Uncut Gems. It’s the best movie I saw all year.” Meghan McCain’s gems are definitely cut, but in this case, I agree with her.
