‘Killer Inside’: Netflix Teases Aaron Hernandez Documentary in First Trailer

Netflix has released the official trailer for its new Aaron Hernandez documentary, Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. Netflix’s three-part docuseries will take an in-depth look at the “murderous fall and shocking death” of the convicted murderer and former NFL player, who committed suicide in 2017 after he was found guilty of killing his future brother-in-law Odin Lloyd. As the trailer suggests, Netflix’s Aaron Hernandez documentary explores the player’s early days, as well as his football career with the New England Patriots and his 2013 arrest.

“No one has allegedly murdered two people and then played an entire season as a professional athlete,” says a voiceover at the beginning of the Killer Inside trailer. With the help of archival and recruiting footage, the Aaron Hernandez documentary on Netflix lays out Hernandez’s life and career, from his upbringing in Bristol, Connecticut, to his years as a star tight end at the University of Florida, to his move to the NFL. Hernandez was drafted by the Patriots in 2010, and he quickly became an offensive star; in 2012, he signed a 5-year extension worth close to $40 million.

However, Hernandez struggled off the field, and Netflix’s Aaron Hernandez documentary attempts to explain exactly what went wrong. The football player struggled with drug use and found himself involved in the violent world of organized crime. “Aaron Hernandez was a ticking time bomb,” says one talking head in the trailer. The Killer Inside trailer suggests that the problem may lie with his parents: “I was the happiest little kid in the world, and you fucked me up,” Hernandez can be heard telling his mother in a jailhouse recording. “I had nobody. What did you think I was going to do? Become a perfect angel?”

In 2013, Hernandez was accused of murdering Lloyd, his friend and future brother-in-law. He was quickly released by the Patriots, and in 2015, he was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Two years later, Hernandez was acquitted for a different homicide (in this case, the double homicide of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado). Just a few days later, he was found dead in his cell, with his death later ruled a suicide.

But at the end of the day, the new Aaron Hernandez documentary is not just about the convicted murderer. “This story is not just the Aaron Hernandez story,” says another voiceover. “There’s a lot of lives affected by this guy.”
