Vince Vaughn Chatted with Donald Trump at the National Championship, And Twitter Went Wild: “I Want Nothing More to Do With Him”

On Monday night, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise appearance at the College Football Playoff National Championship between LSU and the Clemson Tigers, and the couple shared a lengthy conversation with Wedding Crashers star Vince Vaughn. A video of Trump and Vaughn chatting it up immediately went viral, prompting strong reactions from both right and left. While liberal users remarked that “Vaughn has never really made a secret of his conservatism,” far-right pundits slammed their left-leaning counterparts for being “perturbed by three adults interacting in a civil manner.”

Last night, journalist Timothy Burke shared a video of Vaughn, a noted LSU fan, chatting animatedly with Donald and Melania Trump during the national championship game. The video doesn’t include any audio of their conversation — it does feature a rendition of “Sweet Caroline” that’s oddly well timed to fit the back and forth — but the actor can be seen nodding and smiling as Trump reaches out to shake his hand. They share a long handshake before Vaughn says a protracted goodbye to everyone else seated in the box.

Burke’s video went viral within minutes (despite the fact that when he tweeted at 9:45 pm ET, Clemson and LSU were locked in a heated battle, trading touchdowns. Does no one on Twitter care about this game?), and before long, users on both sides of the aisle had chimed in with their takes. Many left-leaning users pointed out that Vaughn, a libertarian who has been open about voting for Rand Paul in 2016, “has never really made a secret about his conservatism,” so people shouldn’t be surprised about his conversation with Trump.

However, right-wing pundits seem to think that the left is overreacting, and many slammed the “outrage” over the Trump-Vaughn conversation. “Back off the canceling, stage five clingers,” tweeted former NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch. “Please say a little prayer for Timothy who’s perturbed by three adults interacting in a civil manner,” added right-wing columnist Rita Panahi.

Knowing Trump, it won’t take long for him to divulge what he and Vaughn were really talking about.
