Here’s When ‘Doctor Sleep’ Is Coming to Video on Demand

Star Wars and Marvel aren’t the only cinematic mega franchises out there. Stephen King devotees know that the author’s works test and stretch the boundaries of their own continuity, with works and adaptations crossing over and calling back to each other with surprising regularity. Never has that been on display in a more complex way than with Doctor Sleep, a film that’s a sequel to both a Stephen King novel and Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of a King classic.

The film, which comes from The Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan, is indeed an adaptation to King’s 2013 follow-up to The Shining. The story picks up decades after the events of the classic thriller and follows an adult Dan Torrance, now a psychic hospice orderly. But the film is more than that; while it’s an adaptation of the novel, it twists continuity so that it’s actually a follow-up to the 1980 Kubrick film (a film that took a couple of liberties with King’s original work). Got all that?

Ewan McGregor stars as Dan Torrance, with Rebecca Ferguson, Cliff Curtis, Jacob Tremblay, and Bruce Greenwood rounding out the cast. But how can you watch Doctor Sleep? Can you stream it? And when will the Doctor Sleep Blu-ray be released? Here’s what you need to know!

When will Doctor Sleep be released digitally?

Doctor Sleep crawls onto digital on January 21. If you’ve made the jump from physical media to the cloud, you’ll be able to add the film to your digital library by buying Doctor Sleep from your preferred digital video store, including iTunes, Prime Video, FandangoNow, Google Play, Vudu, and more. If you can wait, though, you’ll be able to get a digital copy of the film along with the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD copies.

When will Doctor Sleep be available to rent digitally?

If you are willing to wait, you’ll be able to check out Doctor Sleep by renting it on VOD. Doctor Sleep will be available to rent digitally via those platforms listed above beginning on February 4.

When will the Doctor Sleep Blu-ray be released?

Doctor Sleep comes to Blu-ray on February 4. You’ll be able to purchase the pic in three different formats: the 4K UHD release (which also comes with a Blu-ray and digital code), the Blu-ray release (which also comes with a digital code) and the DVD release (which also comes with a digital code).

When is Doctor Sleep coming to DVD?

The DVD copy of Doctor Sleep comes out on the same day as the Blu-ray and 4K versions: February 4. Note that unlike a lot of Blu-ray releases, Doctor Sleep’s doesn’t come with a DVD version of the film. If you want to own Doctor Sleep on DVD, the DVD release is the only way to get it. It does, however, come with a digital download code.

What special features will be included?

The 4K and Blu-ray (and presumably digital) copies of the film will include a trio of featurettes: “Return to the Overlook,” “The Making of Doctor Sleep: A New Vision,” and “From Shining to Sleep.”

What about the Doctor Sleep Director’s Cut?

The Doctor Sleep Director’s Cut includes 30 minutes of previously unseen footage added back into the film by director Mike Flanagan. The director’s cut will be available on the digital, 4K, and Blu-ray copies of the film.

When will Doctor Sleep be on Netflix?

Don’t hold out hope for Doctor Sleep to land on Netflix any time soon. That’s because the film is a Warner Bros. picture and Warner Bros. has their own streaming service coming out soon: HBO Max. That’s why Warner Bros. movies don’t tend to stream on Netflix, and it means that it’s possible Doctor Sleep will end up available to stream on HBO Max (if it pops up anywhere).

When will Doctor Sleep be on HBO?

Even if Doctor Sleep doesn’t stream on HBO Max, it will most likely end up on HBO and HBO Go as the network’s Saturday night movie. Warner Bros. films usually debut on TV around 8 months after they debut in theaters. That means it’s possible that Doctor Sleep will be added to HBO Go in July 2020.
