Meghan McCain Tears Into “Garbage” New York Times Endorsements: “A Huge Act of Cowardice”

Is there anyone out there that agreed with the New York Times’ dual endorsement? On Tuesday morning, the women of The View laid into the paper’s editorial board for endorsing both Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar for the 2020 Democratic nomination. Meghan McCain was particularly harsh as she called out the “garbage publication” for the non-decision, saying, “It’s a huge act of cowardice on the New York Times.”

On Sunday night, after days of fanfare, the Times announced its 2020 endorsement at the end of a new episode of Hulu docuseries The Weekly. In a “break with convention,” the paper opted to back both Warren, a progressive, and Klobuchar, a centrist, two candidates with incredibly different ideologies and platforms. “Both the radical and the realist models warrant serious consideration. If there were ever a time to be open to new ideas, it is now. If there were ever a time to seek stability, now is it,” the editorial board wrote.

But if the New York Times was looking for widespread approval, they certainly didn’t get it from The View‘s co-hosts. In a rare moment of agreement, the entire panel thought that the double endorsement (or any endorsement, in Whoopi Goldberg’s case) was ill-advised. “I don’t think it’s a good idea,” said the show’s longtime moderator.

McCain was next to chime in, and she didn’t hold back. “I was laughing my ass off when I read this,” she said. “You’re endorsing two women with two completely ideologically different views on their path forward.” McCain noted that “the New York Times has the most access to all these candidates, arguably of any other outlet,” and yet the editorial board still “can’t figure out one” to endorse. “I’m sorry, everyone in here is going to have to choose one. This is not how his works,” she said.

“Also, on the final point of this, you chose both of the women. Is this just — just say, ‘I want a woman,'” she continued. “Just double down on identity politics. I think it is a huge act of cowardice on the New York Times, but at this point, I should expect absolutely nothing less from this garbage publication.”

McCain got a round of applause from the audience, but Joy Behar pushed back. “The New York Times is not a garbage publication,” she said, reminding her co-host that “we don’t have to destroy the whole newspaper” because of their editorial board’s decision. “I can,” fired back McCain. “I can do whatever I want.”

“Yeah, you can, and so can they,” replied Behar. When McCain pressed her, Behar admitted that she agrees that choosing two candidates was a bad call. “They are, in effect, splitting the vote by doing this. They are diametrically opposed,” she said. “So it’s a mistake. I agree with you, basically. I just don’t agree with you about the New York Times.”
