Wendy Williams Claims NeNe Leakes is Leaving ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’

Is original cast member NeNe Leakes quitting The Real Housewives of Atlanta? On Tuesday morning, Wendy Williams suggested just that when she claimed that Leakes called her with the news earlier that morning. While The Wendy Williams Show host declined to share specific details about what is wrong, she begged NeNe Leakes not to leave RHOA, as she “need[s] that platform to explain” the situation. “I know something about NeNe that you all will cry, be sad, feel bad for her,” said Williams. “She’s carrying the weight of a huge thing on her shoulders.”

This morning, Williams threw guest Jerry O’Connell for a loop when she said that she received a surprise message from Leakes during the last commercial break. “Here’s the phone call that I got. I took a break in between commercials — my office is right there behind the set,” said Williams. “I had to go to the bathroom and so I looked at my phone in between commercials. And NeNe texts, ‘I’m quitting.'”

O’Connell, who was there to promote his new WGN show Carter, pressed her for information, but the host wouldn’t budge, explaining that she’s worried O’Connell will share with his wife Rebecca Romijn. “I have got to say something, but I’m not going to say a whole lot,” she said. “I know something about NeNe that you all will cry, be sad, feel bad for her. She’s carrying the weight of a huge thing on her shoulders.” O’Connell asked if Leakes’ husband and kids are okay, and Williams assured him that they’re fine. “I’m not going to say it, she’s got to say it,” added Williams. “But in my opinion, NeNe — I didn’t even call you back — you need this platform to explain the other part of your life.”

“Forget arguing with them broads — you’ve got that secret, and that secret is going to melt their hearts,” she continued. “Because when she shared it with me, I cried with her.”

Williams again promised that she wouldn’t reveal why NeNe Leakes is quitting RHOA, and she began tearing up as she spoke about her friend. “NeNe, you need that platform to explain, that’s all,” she said. “That’s all. I’m telling you. NeNe, don’t quit.”

A representative for the star has denied Williams’ claim about NeNe Leakes leaving RHOA. “It’s been an especially difficult couple of weeks for NeNe, and she was venting to her friend in private correspondence,” her rep told People. “Nothing has been confirmed or officially decided for next season.”

Leakes has appeared on Real Housewives of Atlanta since the show first debuted in 2008. She has appeared in almost every season, with the exception of Season 9, and is widely considered a favorite Housewife among fans. This year, in Season 12, Leakes has made headlines for her feud with Kenya Moore; People reports that in the January 12 episode, their fight came to a head in a near-physical altercation in a hotel room. Has Leakes left RHOA due to the ongoing drama with Kenya Moore, or could it be something entirely different?
