Watch the ‘Cheer’ Squad Perform Their Winning Routine on ‘Ellen’

The cast of Netflix’s Cheer plus The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a winning combo. On Thursday, host Ellen DeGeneres sat down with the Navarro College stars to discuss the Netflix docuseries that has taken the world by storm. Cheer standouts Gabi Butler, La’Darius Marshall, Jerry Harris, and Coach Monica Aldama were open about the show’s impact on their own lives and the program, which is gearing up for another trip to Daytona this spring. Speaking of Daytona, the Cheer squad wrapped their Ellen appearance with an encore performance of their championship-winning routine, and obviously, they went full-out.

Before the Cheer cast stunned The Ellen Show‘s audience with last year’s routine, DeGeneres chatted with some of the docuseries’ biggest stars about the past two weeks. The host praised Jeremiah “Jerry” Harris’ positivity, and she asked him to show off his “mat talk” skills for the crowd. “Ellen, if you were on the floor with me, I would mat talk you like this,” he said, jumping to his feet. “‘Let’s go, Ellen! You got it! Push! Get up! Let’s go!'” Both DeGeneres and her audience loved it. “Whenever I’m on stage I should bring you on the side,” she joked.

When the excitement subsided, Gabi Butler, an Instagram and cheer star in her own right, updated viewers on her fraught relationship with her parents. “We all watched it together as a family, and we were like, ‘Oh, wow,'” she told DeGeneres. “It was a really big eye opener for all of us.” Gabi explained that Cheer helped her parents realize that they “need to let her be more independent” and enabled her to “love herself more.” She added, “I’m very grateful for the show.”

While we love catching up with the cast, the real highlight of the Cheer cast on Ellen was their performance. The entire team came together to perform last year’s championship-winning routine, with a few tweaks, of course. No one wants to see the pyramid fall apart on national television.

But this is Ellen we’re talking about, and no one goes home empty handed. “We know that you have a lot of money that you have to raise to compete each year, so our friends at Shutterfly want to cheer you on with a check for $20,000,” said the beloved talk show host. Cue another freakout — and a very well-deserved one, at that.
