Bryan Cranston Revives ‘The Shining’ Twins in Creepy Mountain Dew Super Bowl Commercial

Hereeeee’s Mountain Dew! On Tuesday, Mountain Dew released a new commercial with Bryan Cranston to promote their new product, MTN Dew Zero Sugar (no worries, it’s still just as green as the original). The new Bryan Cranston commercial spoofs The Shining, with the Breaking Bad star taking on the iconic role of Jack Nicholson’s Jack Torrance. Cranston easily slips into the writer-gone-mad’s shoes, but this time, he simply wants to quench Tracee Ellis Ross’ thirst instead of, you know, trying to kill her.

Mountain Dew’s new commercial puts a new spin on The Shining‘s “Here’s Johnny?” scene, in which Jack Torrance breaks down a bathroom door in an attempt to kill his wife Wendy. Like Nicholson’s character, Cranston stalks the halls in search of his wife, and he finally finds her in the bathroom. “I’ve got new MTN Dew Zero Sugar,” he says, knocking on the door with the neon green bottle. “With the same refreshing taste as the original, but without any of the sugar!”

Cranston, now desperate to give his wife (who is revealed to be black-ish star Ellis Ross) a zero-sugar caffeine buzz, breaks through the door with an axe. She screams and hits the axe with a shower brush, but her efforts are fruitless. “Here’s MTN Dew Zero,” says a menacing Cranston through the hole in the door. “I am thirsty,” replies Ellis Ross as she takes the bottle. Clever!

“MTN Dew Zero Sugar,” the commercial reads. “As good as the original, maybe even better?”

But the commercial ain’t over until the Grady sisters sing: the 30-second spot ends with an image of Cranston as The Shining‘s creepy twins. Maybe Mountain Dew’s Bryan Cranston ad really is better than the original?
