When Is the ‘Hamilton’ Movie Coming to Disney+?

UPDATE: On May 12, 2020, Disney announced that they would fast-track the release for Hamilton. The film will be on Disney+ on July 3, 2020. That means it will be skipping its 2021 theatrical release.

Hamilton is finally coming to movie theaters! Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and Walt Disney Pictures both announced today that Disney will be releasing a film of the original Hamilton Broadway cast performing the show in the Richard Rogers theater. That means that everyone now has a chance to see Lin-Manuel Miranda rap his way through history along with Lamar Odom, Jr., Daveed Diggs, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and the rest of the Tony-winning cast. The Hamilton movie — or #Hamilfilm — will be released on October 15, 2021.

Because Disney is releasing the movie version of Hamilton, we have to wonder…will Hamilton be on Disney+? If Hamilton is coming to Disney+, then when is Hamilton coming to Disney+? And will Disney censor Hamilton’s profanities (and damped down the sexier elements) for it’s family-friendly audience?

Here’s everything we know so far about Hamilton the musical coming to Disney+.

WHAT IS THE HAMILTON FILM RELEASE DATE? WHEN WILL THE HAMILTON MUSICAL MOVIE COME OUT?

The Hamilton movie will be in wide cinematic release on October 15, 2021.

WHEN WILL HAMILTON BE ON DISNEY+? CAN I WATCH LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA’S HAMILTON MUSICAL ON DISNEY+?

Right now you can’t stream Hamilton the musical anywhere because it hasn’t been released yet.

However, we know that Disney will release the Hamilton movie on October 15, 2021. Looking at when Aladdin (2019) and The Lion King (2019) hit Disney+, we can see that new titles take about six and a half months to make the leap from theatrical release to Disney+’s library. Given that, we would expect Hamilton to hit Disney+ in April or May 2022.

WILL HAMILTON BE ON DISNEY+? WILL DISNEY CHANGE HAMILTON OR CENSOR HAMILTON FOR UNDERAGE AUDIENCES?

Right now, Disney has yet to confirm (or deny) that Hamilton will be on Disney+. However, since it is a Walt Disney Studios production, it stands to reason that it will hit Disney+ at some point.

That said, given that Hamilton has a plethora of profanity, some steamy sexual content, and historic dual-related violence…it might not hit Disney+. Disney might decide it’s a better fit, along with its recently acquired FX catalogue, for Hulu.

We’ll get our best indicator of how Disney plans to handle Hamilton when Adventures in Babysitting finally hits Disney+ in 2021. That film is also known for its raunchy content, including f-bombs. If Disney censors those curse words and/or adds a disclaimer to the film’s title page, we can guess that’s how the Mouse will handle Hamilton.

WILL THERE BE A BABY YODA/HAMILTON CROSSOVER EVENT ON DISNEY+?

Buddy, there already is a Baby Yoda/Hamilton crossover! Thanks to Ice2Ice and The Ringer, we already know how Hamilton would deal with the breakout star of The Mandalorian and Disney+. (Now lets just get Lamar Odom, Jr. and Lin-Manuel Miranda on the song.)
