New Movies on Demand: ‘Knives Out,’ ‘Jojo Rabbit,’ ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,’ and More

Hello, Friday! What’s new with me? I’ve been fine, since last we spoke I cleaned my apartment, paid some bills and survived another work week. What about you? Wait, you know what? Let’s hang out all weekend and catch up because it has been way too long. And what better way to pass the time together than by watching some great movies from the comfort of home? Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.

After a week like this one, we all are in dire need of some sunshine. One place you can definitely find a great pick-me-up this weekend is in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Starring Tom Hanks as the incomparable Fred Rogers, this film will tug at your heartstrings and remind you that there is childlike innocence in everyone, you just have to remember it. But if you are in the mood for a completely absurd comedy, then look no further than Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit. This irreverent film set in WWII Germany follows a young boy named Jojo who finds companionship in his lonely world from his imaginary friend: Adolf Hitler. But when he discovers that his mother (played by Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in their attack, Jojo must battle with himself — literally — and confront his blind nationalism. But the amazing list of movies doesn’t stop there: 21 BridgesMidway and Knives Out are all availably available on demand as well!

Curious about what else is out there? Check out what other dramas, thrillers and action films you can buy or rent this week.

Knives Out

Move over, Agatha Christie! From the brilliant mind of Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) comes Knives Out: a brilliant murder mystery film that takes the genre to a whole new level. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate right after his 85th birthday, Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is hired to investigate. But from the deranged family to the dearly devoted staff, figuring out whodunit is going to be no easy task for our debonair detective. Starring Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Chris Evans’ sweater and more, Knives Out sharpens the dated murder mystery trope with its witty banter, stylish suspense and a perfect touch of cheeky satire to make fun of the genre it masters.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

And while it may be gloomy outside, it is a beautiful day in your living room thanks to Tom Hanks’ A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Based on a true story, this heartfelt film follows a jaded journalist (Matthew Rhys) whose life is forever changed when he is assigned to write a profile piece on children’s tv host Fred Rogers. Much like Rogers himself, this beautiful film tells its beautiful story while projecting warmth, empathy and an appreciation of the little things on every person who watches it. We also have to note how perfectly cast Tom Hanks is in his role: he really is Fred Rogers, is he not?

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Horror masters Guillermo del Toro and André Øvredal come together to create Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the bone-chilling horror film about nightmares coming to life. Based on the Alvin Schwartz children’s book series, this film follows a group of pre-teen kids who unintentionally unleash terrifying creatures from a book of short stories out into the world. If you grew up on the books, then you cannot afford to miss seeing illustrator Stephen Gammell’s monsters come to life. But don’t be fooled; although it shares the same name as the series, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is in no way near kid-friendly!
