‘Locke & Key’s Most Delightful, Surprise Cameos Were Saved For Last

Spoilers for Netflix’s Locke & Key past this point.

About 22 minutes into the final episode of Locke & Key Season 1, titled “Crown of Shadows,” young Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott) is worried about his friend Rufus Whedon (Coby Bird). Rufus has been attacked by the villainous Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira), and his mother is missing – so naturally, Bode is concerned. He runs out to check on him in an ambulance, and that’s when we get two delightful, surprise cameos that are straight out of the comic book source material.

Here they are, in all their glory:

In case you don’t have eagle eyes, there are two paramedics and a cop standing outside the Whedon house while Bode runs by. Why are they significant? Turns out, they’re none other than the creators of the Locke & Key comic books, Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

And after Bode spends some time talking to Rufus, we get close ups on the dynamic duo.

“Rufus, you okay there?” says Gabriel Roriguez’s character, Paramedic #1.

“Affirmative,” answers Rufus, who mostly relates to the world through his G.I. Joes.

“Sorry, kid, we gotta go now,” Joe Hill, playing Paramedic #2, says right after that.

That’s pretty much the whole scene (you get a quick glimpse of them as they close the ambulance doors), but beyond being a sweet way of paying tribute to Hill and Rodriguez, it’s actually a scene (sort of) right out of the books.

In the final volume of Locke & Key, “Alpha & Omega,” Hill and Rodriguez were drawn in by the latter as… None other than paramedics. The costumes and circumstances aren’t exactly the same, and in the intervening years Hill has grown a beard. But otherwise, it’s a nice way to close out the season by seeing their faces pop up, just as they did in the comics.

Not only that, but they get a sweet credit in the finale, hanging out with Hallea Jones (who played mean girl Eden Hawkins on the series):

See, now Eden & The Parademics is a spin-off we want to see. Make it happen, Netflix.
