Spoilers for the first season of Netflix’s Locke & Key past this point.

A wise man once said that with great power, comes great responsibility. So now that the kids of Netflix’s Locke & Key have (they think) gotten rid of the villainous Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) and have control of several, powerful magical keys… What’s next?

“Season 1 is about these kids basically discovering that they’re the keepers of the keys,” Locke & Key Executive Producer Carlton Cuse told Decider, “and then for us Season 2 is a lot about now knowing that they are the keepers of the keys, what does that responsibility mean?”

A brief refresher for those of you who are in a haze after bingeing all 10 episodes in Locke & Key Season 1. After moving to the town of Matheson, the Locke kids discovered various magical keys, each with their own abilities. Along the way, they tussled with Dodge in various identities, who was trying to get control of one powerful key called the Omega Key. At the end of the season, the Lockes thought they threw Dodge through the Black Door, a portal to a demon dimension… Only Dodge tricked them, and is still wandering Matheson in the guise of local teen Gabe (Griffin Gluck).

Still, Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) have a few minutes to sit and breathe — particularly since Netflix hasn’t yet officially picked up the series for Season 2. That said? Cuse and company are hard at work, anyway.

“We’re writing Season 2 even though we haven’t been picked up,” Cuse said, “with the anticipation and hope that we will get picked up.”

Normally, though there’s no hard and fast rule, Netflix will generally not announce pickups until about a month after a season airs, so don’t expect any news on this front until sometime in March, earliest. That said, if Cuse and company do get the go-ahead for Locke & Key Season 2, there’s one aspect of the comic book source material by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez you shouldn’t expect to appear: Tyler’s iconic Oakland A’s baseball hat.

When we asked Cuse and fellow EP Averill about it turning up in Season 2 (it makes a brief appearance at the end of Season 1), they gave a definitive “no” each, with a laugh.

“The hat’s fine, but no,” Cuse added.

Still, while Jessup might not be donning the hat full time, it’s not just a fun affectation from Rodriguez’s art… It also plays a role in the plot towards the end of the comic series’ run, particularly the fish hook on it given to Tyler by his deceased father.

“As you know, the hat has a plot,” Averill said. “There is a plot reason behind the hat… We would love to tell that story, but we don’t think that he necessarily has to wear a hat 24/7 in order to tell that story.”

Agree to disagree, I guess. As they say: with great power, comes great hats.
