After 20 hours and too many epic shootouts and betrayals to count, Narcos: Mexico has finally concluded the saga of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo. That just leaves one very important question. Will there be a Narcos: Mexico Season 3? And if so when will Narcos: Mexico Season 3 premiere?

Narcos has always worked differently than most other dramas and miniseries. Rather than steadfastly sticking to one protagonist every season or switching between drug lords each year, Narcos has played with its timelines. The stories of two of the series’ cartels, the Medellín Cartel and the Guadalajara Cartel, were told over two seasons a piece. Meanwhile the Cali Cartel’s saga was only chronicled in one season. Basically we don’t know what’s next for Narcos, but we have some guesses.

Will There Be a Narcos: Mexico Season 3?

Right now the future of this drug dealing drama is uncertain. Netflix has yet to renew Narcos: Mexico for a new season. But there’s still hope.

The first season of Narcos premiered on Netflix in August of 2015. Its following season was released in September of 2016, and it was renewed for Seasons 3 and 4 that same month. That fourth season aired and was renamed Narcos: Mexico, the series’ latest iteration. That spinoff series was renewed for a second season a month later in December of 2018. So based on that timeline we should know if there will be more episodes of Narcos: Mexico to look forward to within the month.

When Will Narcos: Mexico Season 3 Premiere?

Typically it takes Netflix about a year to produce a new season of its drama. But the wait for Narcos: Mexico Season 2 was longer than that timeframe. Though its first season premiered in November of 2018, Season 2 wasn’t released until February of 2020. Based on those timelines we can expect a possible Narcos: Mexico Season 2 to be released between spring and fall of 2021.

What Will Happen in Narcos: Mexico Season 3?

We may not know if a new season of Narcos is happening, but we know who the show wants to spotlight: El Chapo. Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán (Alejandro Edda) was first introduced in Narcos: Mexico Season 1 as one of Héctor Luis Palma Salazar’s (Gorka Lasaosa) gunmen. Season 2 saw him rise through the ranks of the Sinaloa Cartel and eventually run logistics for Félix Gallardo’s (Diego Luna) trafficking operation. So we’re already more than familiar with Narcos‘ take on the notorious drug lord. And his story is just beginning.

Narcos: Mexico Season 2 ends with Félix Gallardo’s arrest for the murder of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena (Michael Peña). It was after that arrest that El Chapo’s criminal career really started to take off. He formed his own cartel in 1988, which produced and smuggled cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and heroin into the United States. He achieved his mass reach, which was comparable to Pablo Escobar, thanks to a series of tunnels built on his orders.

If Narcos: Mexico continues this big name is probably who it’s going to cover next. There may even be a possibility that El Chapo’s story will see Narcos‘ first-ever three season arc. Considering all of El Chapo’s arrests and manhunts, there’s certainly enough material for several 10-hour seasons.
