Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! It’s a day all about love, romance, light….or, if you are another single person like me, this is a pointless Hallmark holiday designed to make people in relationships spend money on disposable gifts and disgustingly-overpriced Prix-fixe dinners with fifty other couples in a crowded room. In this humble writer’s opinion, no matter your relationship status on Valentine’s Day, the best way to celebrate is by spending quality time with the ones you love. And what better way to do so than by staying in, gorging on pizza and watching some great movies and shows on your favorite streaming platforms! The universe must agree because whether you prefer to use Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or HBO, there are a ton of titles out this weekend that are perfect for lovers and haters of romance alike.

This weekend’s releases are coming from a wide variety of sources, but we could not be more excited about that fact. After its birth as a Nick Hornby novel, then a John Cusack film, the romantic comedy High Fidelity has found its home as a Hulu-original series. Zoë Kravitz serves as both executive producer and star of this witty and introspective series about a young woman who, after getting her heart broken for the last time, decides to take a trip down memory lane to figure out the common denominator of her failed love affairs. But if you are in the mood for a more hopelessly-romantic time this weekend, then be sure to check out the latest season of Outlanders which is coming out on Starz February 15 (February 14 on the Starz app) and Prime Video February 16! Season 5 of this time-traveling drama series follows the Fraser family as they attempt to live out the American Revolution. We cannot wait to see what steamy love scenes and moral conflicts these characters will get themselves into this season!

But for those who choose to banish the holiday from your conscious, then Shaft, HBO’s Saturday movie, is perfect for you. Rife with amazing fight sequences, comedy routines and enough badass wordplay to last a generation, the latest iteration of this action series brings back the glorious Samuel L. Jackson, the OG Richard Roundtree and newcomer Jessie T. Usher. Want to forget about romance and instead fall into a pit of fun, look no further than Shaft.

High Fidelity

Zoë Kravitz stars in the new Hulu comedy, High Fidelity. Loosely based on the Nick Hornby novel of the same name as well as the 2000 film adaptation, this series centers on Rob (Kravitz), a young woman who owns a record shop in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Still reeling from a breakup with the love of her life, Rob decides to reflect on her top five past romantic partners in hopes of solving her terrible riddle: why she can’t seem to find everlasting love. As the viewer is carried through fourth-wall-breaking monologues, flashbacks and offbeat comedic confrontations, we come to realize that the problem is not the dumpers, but perhaps the dumpee’s misattributed sense of self. Also starring David H. Holmes and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite Is My Name), High Fidelity is the perfect un-romantic comedy series to binge-watch on this Valentine’s Day.

Outlander: Season 5

As if Valentine’s Day isn’t romantic enough, Outlander is back for Season 5 this Saturday! This romantic drama series picks back up with the entire Fraser family living in colonial America, trying to find their happily-ever-after during a most unstable time: the American Revolution. As the war looms over Claire, Jamie and the rest of the reunited Fraser clan, our protagonists will have to navigate duty, love and foresight to survive the past so they can have a future. Not to mention, a new season of Outlander is sure to be rife with steamy scenes to keep the love high going all weekend long!

Shaft

We can never get too much Shaft. The latest installment of this neo-noir action film features the newest John Shaft to enter the crime-stopping family: JJ Shaft (Jessie T. Usher), a by-the-book FBI agent. When his childhood friend dies from an alleged drug overdose, JJ senses something amiss and reluctantly turns to his estranged father John Shaft II (Samuel L. Jackson) and grandfather John Shaft Sr. (Richard Roundtree), for help. The old and new guard must reconcile with each other as both modern investigative styles and old-school street ways are necessary in order to find out the truth in this tip-of-the-iceberg case.
