‘I Am Not Okay With This’: Watch the Official Trailer for Netflix’s Teenage Superhero Story

What do you get when you mix superpowers, puberty, and a massive Netflix budget? The answer is I Am Not Okay With This, an irreverent coming-of-age story from the producers behind Stranger Things and The End of the F***ing World. Today, Netflix finally released the official trailer for the dramedy, and it already looks as angst-ridden as its graphic novel namesake.

I Am Not Okay With This stars Sophia Lillis (ITSharp Objects) as Sydney, a teenage misanthrope attempting to survive high school. Sydney describes herself as “boring 17-year-old white girl” and insists that she’s “not special,” but we soon learn that that couldn’t be further from the truth. After dealing with a series of disappointments — the trailer reveals that Sydney’s father recently passed away, her best friend is dating a rude jock, and her relationship with her mother is at a breaking point — the frustrated teen discovers that she has mysterious telekinetic superpowers. So much for “not special.”

In addition to establishing Sydney’s powers, Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This trailer also introduces viewers to her neighbor-turned-friend Stanley Barber (fellow IT star Wyatt Oleff). Stanley is definitely, uh, eccentric, but he and Sydney form a genuine connection, and she turns to him as her life begins to spiral out of control. “You can tell me anything. You know that, right?” he says in the trailer. Clearly, she does, because the next thing we know, Sydney (accidentally) sends bowling balls flying at Stanley’s head.

Based on Charles Forsman’s graphic novel of the same name, I Am Not Okay With This is co-created by Jonathan Entwistle, the director and executive producer of The End of the F***ing World, and Christy Hall. The series is also executive produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, and Josh Barry of 21 Laps Entertainment, the team behind Stranger Things. If those two series are any indication, I Am Not Okay With This is poised to be Netflix’s YA hit of the year.
