Who Is CT 1409 on ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ “The Bad Batch”?

After way too long of a wait, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is back in action on Disney+. The fan favorite (and massively important) series is finishing out its 10+ year run with a blowout Season 7, one that fans have been waiting for for six years.

In fact, diehard Clone Wars fans are probably already very familiar the Season 7 premiere. The episode, titled “The Bad Batch,” actually debuted during a special presentation at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim way back in 2015. The rough, unfinished reels of “Bad Batch” and the rest of the four-part Clone Force 99 arc were screened and later released officially on the Star Wars website. You can actually watch the finished version, just released on Disney+, alongside the unfinished reel on YouTube. This episode really has been in the making for years!

Because the plot of “The Bad Batch” has been known for so long, that final scene probably didn’t come as a surprise to everyone that’s done even a light Googling of the Clone Wars canon. But for all the Clone Wars newcomers, especially those getting into the show now that it is getting a spotlight on Disney+, here’s everything you need to know about CT 1409.

Who is CT 1409 on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “The Bad Batch”?

At the end of the episode, clone trooper Captain Rex intercepts a transmission from a mystery clone trooper reciting a string of letters and numbers: CT 1409. When Tech, one of the “bad batch” clone troopers of Clone Force 99, asks what those numbers mean, Rex spills the tea: CT 1409 is the designation for the clone trooper Echo, one of Rex’s old friends who was presumed dead.

Who is Echo? He was introduced in Season 1 of Clone Wars (see episode list below) and came back for a couple arcs in Season 3, including “The Citadel” storyline. Echo was a very by-the-books clone, and he earned his nickname because he always echoed rules and regulations back to his fellow troops. Echo fell in battle during a mission to rescue the captured Jedi Master Even Piell, presumably slain during a firefight with a heavily-armed droid. The last we saw of Echo, all that remained was a scorched helmet.

If you want to learn more about Echo before his story continues next week, you can easily binge all of his previous Clone Wars appearances in one sitting. The clone trooper only appeared in five previous episodes of the series, presented below in chronological order.

Throw yourself a little Echo mini-marathon sometime this week and you’ll be prepared for the character’s inevitable return in the next episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

New episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 will be added to Disney+ every Friday.
