Disney+ Needs to Add ‘Mandalorian’ Special Features like This Incredible FX Reel ASAP

When it comes to what we can expect from small-screen sci-fi, The Mandalorian blew past expectations every single week. The flagship Disney+ series did not shy away from special effects, alien worlds, and far out creatures. It felt every bit as grand as a major motion picture, which makes sense considering that hefty budget. So, how did The Mandalorian pull off trips to exotic locales every single week? A new featurette focusing on the “virtual production” reveals how the magic was made.

If you followed the behind-the-scenes story of The Mandalorian, then you’ve already read about the groundbreaking new technology that was tested out and perfected over the course of filming Season 1. The tech allowed for footage of real or computer-generated locations to encompass massive, sprawling LED screens that respond to camera movements, project immersive light, and allow for the actors to interact with their environments rather than be stranded in a sea of green. This making-of video shows the LED screens in action, revealing that a lot more of the show was shot using the tech than you ever thought.

The screens weren’t just used to transport the crew to otherwise harsh filming locations (desert scenes are not easy!). It turns out that even interior locations like hangars, hangout spots, and offices utilized a mix of practical set pieces and LED screen tech to create a seamless, unclockable environment.

The featurette is a real jaw-dropper and shows the level of ingenuity and care that went into crafting this blast of a show. It’s also, and Disney+ needs to take note, the exact kinda thing that should be included on Disney+! In addition to being on the Industrial Light & Magic YouTube page, this content should be either available on (and possibly completely produced for!) the streaming service that houses The Mandalorian. Seriously. There’s an “extras” tab on all Disney+ content for a reason. That’s where you can find special features for movies, including the Star Wars movies. But when you click on “extras” on The Mandalorian, you get a trailer. And that’s it. Come on, Disney+!

We always knew there were cameras rolling during the production capturing the production, but this featurette shows exactly what we’re missing out on. We want to see how this show was made, especially while we wait for Season 2 to drop later this year! There is so much footage of Baby Yoda in your vault, and it is time to unleash it!
