Reboots of beloved classic films are a tricky thing, but according to critics and audiences, The Invisible Man—which is in theaters today—has pulled it off. This 2020 film starring Elisabeth Moss is based on H.G. Wells 1897 science fiction novel, and a reboot of the 1933 movie starring Claude Rains. Eighty-seven years ago, Rains starred as Dr. Jack Griffin, a scientist who discovers the formula for invisibility, and, like any good evil scientist, tries to use his knowledge to take over the world.
The new film stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen in the mad scientist role, as well as Moss’s character’s abusive ex-husband. Written and directed by Leigh Whannell (best known for the Insidious franchise), the film currently has a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. We don’t doubt that it’s good, but nothing beats the original, which is widely considered by many to be not just one of the most iconic horror films, but one of the most iconic films, period.
