Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison

Disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in prison on two different sexual abuse charges. Weinstein was given 20 years in prison with five years post-release supervision on the charge of criminal sexual act in the first-degree, and 3 years with 5 years post-release supervision for third-degree rape. As part of the third-degree rape charge, he will be also required to register as a sex offender.

Last Friday, the Manhattan D.A.’s office asked Judge James Burke to consider decades of sexual abuse allegations in his sentencing ruling. According to Variety, prosecutors filed a lengthy memo that chronicles more than 30 allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and workplace misconduct that date back to the late 1970s.

Weinstein’s attorneys, on the other hand, pleaded with Burke on Monday to give him the minimum sentence of five years. “The grave reality is that Mr. Weinstein may not even outlive that term,” wrote his attorneys in a letter.

After a weeks-long trial and five days of jury deliberation, Weinstein, 67, was found guilty on two of five total criminal charges on February 24. The convicted sex offender was convicted on one count of criminal sexual act in the first-degree for forcibly performing oral sex on Project Runway production assistant Miriam “Mimi” Haleyi, a charge that carries a sentence of five to 25 years in prison. He was also convicted of rape in the third-degree for sexually assaulting hairstylist Jessica Mann, which carries a sentence of 18 months to four years.

The 12-person jury acquitted Weinstein on two additional charges of predatory sexual assault — top charges that carry a life sentence — and one charge of rape in the first-degree. Before moving to acquit, the jury had a difficult time coming to a conclusion on one of the predatory sexual assault charges and asked to re-hear parts of Annabella Sciorra’s testimony. Sciorra, who is best known for her work in The Sopranos, has claimed that Weinstein barged into her apartment in the winter of 1993-1994 and violently raped her.

Weinstein may be facing a long prison sentence, but his time in court is far from over. His lawyers have already stated that they plan to appeal the conviction, and he is currently awaiting trial in Los Angeles on two additional charges of sexual assault. In early January, Weinstein was charged with one felony count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force, and sexual battery by restraint. According to Page Six, LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced that the charges stem from two separate incidents that occurred on two consecutive days in January 2013. If convicted, Weinstein could face up to 28 years in prison in California. He has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.
