Emma is coming to VOD this Friday despite the fact that it’s still playing in theaters, because coronavirus has turned the world upside down — and that includes the world of movies.

In response to the growing concern surrounding the fast-spreading COVID-19, movie theaters across the country are either limiting capacity to 50 percent or shutting down completely in major cities. Universal Pictures announced yesterday that in response, the studio will release four films on VOD early with special pricing for viewers to watch at home, including Emma, which is produced by Focus Features, a subsidiary of Universal.

This 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic 1815 novel first opened in theaters in the U.S. on February 21. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Emma, the self-centered and privileged daughter of Mr. Woodhouse (Bill Nighy) who has a bad habit of manipulating the love lives of everyone around her for her own amusement. Her step-brother, George Knightley (Johnny Flynn) finds her insufferable, but he also secretly loves her. If that plot sounds familiar to you millennials—yes, the movie Clueless is also a loose adaptation of Emma. Directed by Autumn de Wilde, with a screenplay by Eleanor Catton, this version of Emma is pure cotton-candy fun, and exactly the kind of distraction we could all use in these scary times.
