‘Conan’ Will Resume Taping on March 30 With Fully Remote Episodes

For late night host Conan O’Brien, the show must go on. On Wednesday evening, O’Brien announced that his TBS series Conan will begin airing new episodes on March 30. The new episodes will be shot remotely on an iPhone and will feature video interviews with famous guests to ensure the health and safety of show staffers. “The quality of my work will not go down because technically that’s not possible,” joked O’Brien of the fully-remote new episodes.

Like many other late night shows, Conan is currently on a pre-scheduled hiatus, but he plans on coming back with a vengeance the week after next. Beginning March 30, TBS will air new episodes in the show’s usual time slot, 11/10c. These episodes will be filmed remotely on an iPhone and taped without an audience to allow O’Brien’s staff to continue working from home amid the coronavirus outbreak. The new shows will also feature interviews with guests via video chat, but considering that production on practically every major film and television project has been halted, it’s not clear what celebrities will be promoting. That said, new celebrity interviews and new content during this time of upheaval and anxiety is definitely a good thing.

“Our first priority is the health and well-being of everyone in the Team Coco family,” said executive producer Jeff Ross in a statement. “And our second priority is to try and find a way that we can do our jobs safely, from home, and contribute some entertainment for our fans out there who may be hungry for silly distraction.”

While Conan is the only late night show to set an official return date, O’Brien and his fellow hosts have attempted to bring the laughs in various ways. O’Brien has continued to post short videos about life in self-quarantine, including Wednesday’s “Toilet Paper Life Hacks,” and Colbert, Kimmel, and Fallon have begun doing regular monologues from the comfort of their living rooms. According to Variety, these new bits will be mixed in with repeats scheduled to run on CBS and NBC, ensuring that nightly viewers are treated to a (somewhat) timely take on the news.

Conan returns to TBS with new episodes on Monday, March 30. The late night show airs Monday – Thursday at 11/10c.
