In a move true to character, Sonic the Hedgehog is dashing to a VOD release later this month, joining a steadily growing list of films coming to VOD earlier than planned due to closure of theaters during the Coronavirus pandemic. Paramount’s action-adventure video game movie will be available for digital download starting March 31, the studio said today.
Sonic, based on the Sega video game character, first came to theaters last month. It proved to be a hit with viewers, breaking records as the highest-grossing video game film in U.S. box office history. The cast includes Ben Schwartz voicing the spunky blue hedgehog himself, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski. Sonic was first set to premiere in November, 2019 but was pushed after fans objected to the animation featured in a trailer, complaining that the hedgehog on the screen looked nothing like the video game character they were so fond of.
The Coronavirus crisis has forced multiple studios to tweak their release dates for both upcoming films and those already in theaters. Sonic joins titles like Emma, The Hunt and The Invisible Man with its early debut on VOD. Lucky for parents and kids alike, it’s not the only family-friendly release available for home viewing: Disney announced this morning that the Pixar film Onward would be available on VOD today and will be on Disney+ starting April 3.
You can pre-order Sonic for $19.99 on iTunes, Vudu, Google Play and Amazon Prime.
