'The Veil' Episode Guide: How Many Episodes In FX's Elisabeth Moss Spy Thriller?
The Kitchen, which will air on HBO tonight at 8 p.m. ET, is a gritty crime thriller about three Irish mob wives who take over Hell’s Kitchen while their husbands are in prison. Written and directed by Andrea Berloff, and based on the DC/Vertigo Comics limited series of the same name, this is a movie about power, deception, and the struggles of being a woman in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in New York City in the 1970s. It is decidedly not a romance, and despite the fact that it stars two comedy queens, Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish, it’s decidedly not a comedy, either.
And yet, there is a romantic, and funny storyline woven throughout The Kitchen, though it culminates in a particularly gruesome scene that on the surface, doesn’t sound very romantic or funny at all. I’m speaking, of course, of the scene where Elisabeth Moss and Domhnall Gleeson dismember a body together.
As Martin Scorsese fans know, dismembering a body is an essential skill any mobster should have in his or her tool kit. In The Kitchen, Moss’s character, Claire Walsh, is new to this whole mafia thing. She’s not sorry her abusive husband and mob boss Rob (Jeremy Bobb) is off in jail—in fact, she’s so very not sorry, she happily falls into an affair with another mafia member named Gabriel (Gleeson), a Vietnam vet who falls in love with her. When Claire comes to Gabriel with baby’s first dead body (no spoilers!), Gabriel is more than happy to show her the ropes.

What ensues is a weirdly romantic scene featuring Domhnall Gleeson in a tight black tank top calmly explaining the correct way to dismember a dead body in the bathtub with a kitchen knife. He explains you have to puncture the lungs, so the body won’t float when you dump it in the river. He’s a great teacher, honestly. His instructions are very clear and precise. And, like any good teacher, he then hands the knife to Moss and lets her get her hands bloody—after she asks. “I don’t want you to do it,” she says, “I want you to teach me how to do it.”
Awww. She wants to know more about what he does! She’s taking an interest in his work! You know what they say: Couples who slay together, stay together. I’m all in on my new murder OTP, y’all.
