Ellen DeGeneres Slammed for Comparing Isolation in Her Mansion to “Jail”: “Ellen Really is the Worst”

On Monday, The Ellen DeGeneres Show returned with a new episode taped entirely at star Ellen DeGeneres‘ home, where she and wife Portia de Rossi have been self-quarantining for weeks. Despite the palatial digs, the talk show host insisted that her home feels like a prison, a tone deaf comparison that didn’t sit well with critics on Twitter. “What a great look for Ellen as thousands of people sit in actual jail cells just hoping for the best without soap and basic protections,” tweeted Variety’s Caroline Framke.

After taking a few weeks off due to concerns about the novel coronavirus pandemic, DeGeneres returned to the air yesterday with her first of many at-home episodes. “Thanks for not being here,” said the daytime host. “This is crazy. I wasn’t supposed to be doing my show from my house until next season.”

DeGeneres went on to applaud health care workers at the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis before reflecting on her time in isolation. “Today I am filming this in my living room because it has the best light and sound and all the other rooms in my house are filled with toilet paper,” she joked. DeGeneres added that she and de Rossi have been quarantining for three weeks, an experience that has some unintended positive effects. “It’s nice, actually. Because we get to spend time together and talk and really get to know each other,” she said. “Did you know she was Australian?”

But the good vibes stopped there. “This is like being in jail,” continued the Ellen host. “Mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay.” Woof — on many, many levels.

DeGeneres insisted that she wants her show to “lift up” viewers, but the prison joke did anything but. Shortly after the episode aired, Twitter filled up with comments from angry users slamming the host’s out of touch remarks. “Ellen really is the worst,” tweeted one user. “Doesn’t…. she buy/redecorate/sell like… multiple mansions a year?” added another. “Believe me, GITMO is a lot worse, Ellen,” wrote another.

Congrats, Ellen, you’ve done it again. Watch her insanely tone deaf monologue in the clip above.
