‘Tiger King’ Averages Estimated 19 Million Viewers in First 10 Days

Joe Exotic may have lost the 2016 presidential election, but he’s already the winner of 2020. On Wednesday, ratings agency Nielsen released streaming data for Netflix’s Tiger King, which is estimated to have been viewed by just under 19 million people in its first 10 days on the service. By Nielsen’s estimation, the viral docuseries grew exponentially in popularity over the course of its first week, and by the end of the 10-day period, it was so successful that it nearly eclipsed ratings juggernaut Stranger Things Season 3.

According to Nielsen’s Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) Content Ratings solution, Tiger King overcame a slow start to become one of the most successful Netflix titles ever. When the bonkers docuseries dropped on March 20, it was watched by an estimated 280,000 U.S. viewers, a respectable but not world-smashing haul. However, as word of mouth spread on social media, Tiger King ended up nabbing an average minute audience of nearly 2.4 million TV viewers by the end of its first weekend on Netflix.

From there, Tiger King‘s viewership exploded. Nielsen reports that U.S. viewership from Days 4 to 10 (March 23 to March 29) averaged over a million every day, with the highest spike coming on Saturday, March 28 (more than 4 million U.S. viewers). By the end of the 10-day period, Tiger King achieved an estimated average minute audience of 18,996,000 viewers and had a reach of 34.3 million unique viewers.

These staggering figures place Tiger King among some of the most successful Netflix Originals of all time. The docuseries’ 10-day average topped that of Stranger Things Season 2 (17.5 million) and almost matched Stranger Things Season 3’s (20.5 million) record-setting statistic.

While Netflix is shy about releasing detailed viewership information — and even then, it’s shaky — it’s clear that Tiger King has been a massive ratings hit for the streaming giant. The series has been #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list for the past 16 days, the longest any title has held that spot since Netflix first began releasing daily lists in March.
