And you thought you had problems. 50 years ago, the NASA astronauts aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft were forced to deal with the unthinkable when the oxygen tank in their service module failed. The resulting tale of mid-flight bravery inspired countless documentaries and Apollo 13 movies, including Ron Howard and Tom Hanks’ Oscar-nominated film named after the shuttle.
For the uninitiated — or for those without a Prince Philip level of interest in space travel — the Apollo 13 launched from the Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970 with the goal of becoming the third-ever shuttle to land on the Moon. Two days into the mission, an oxygen tank failed, leaving crew members Jack Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise stranded with limited power, a cold and damp cabin, and a shortage of drinking water. With the help of Mission Control in Houston, the astronauts circled around the Moon before successfully making it back to Earth on April 17.
