Katy Perry Talks ‘American Idol’ In Quarantine: “We’re Going To Be Very Creative”

American Idol‘s season remains in limbo due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, but judge Katy Perry has promised fans that the show must go on. On Sunday, Perry hopped on Facebook Live to answer questions from fans, many of whom were concerned that the ABC singing competition will have to suspend its season before heading into the Top 20 live shows. The pop star assured fans that the AI team will figure out a way to continue taping the show, even if that means filming episodes entirely from home. “We’re going to all have to be really creative,” said Perry.

Perry wasted no time before diving into the American Idol drama during her Facebook Live session yesterday. “What’s going on with the show since we’re all still in quarantine?” she asked, reading off a fan question. Perry didn’t offer anything definitive, but suggested that she and fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie are still figuring out how to proceed.

“I know we’re going to be very creative,” she said. “And you’ll just have to be tuning in to that creativity that we are probably going to create from our individual homes. We’ll see how this goes.”

While many reality shows have had to suspend production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, American Idol has had a slight advantage: for the past two months, the ABC series has been airing pre-taped episodes of auditions and early rounds. In order to kill a few more weeks before moving to live shows, AI split its Hawaii-set episodes across two weeks (March 29 and April 5) before finally setting its Top 20 (well, Top 21).

ABC has set a similar strategy for this week. Last night, the show aired Part 1 of American Idol: This is Me, a retrospective on the Top 20 contestants that features unseen footage and performance recaps. Part 2 will air on Sunday, April 19 during the show’s regular 8/7c time slot.
