The Wonders are taking the band into the 21st century. On Friday, April 17, all four members from the fictional band in Tom Hanks’ 1996 film That Thing You Do! will reunite to raise money for coronavirus relief. The Wonders members Tony Everett Scott, Johnathon Schaech, Steve Zahn, and Ethan Embry will also pay tribute to songwriter Adam Schlesinger, who passed away in early April due to complications from COVID-19.
On Monday, Schaech, who played lead singer Jimmy in the musical comedy, announced that he and his fictional bandmates will be reuniting for a live That Thing You Do! watch party on Friday evening. The event will be live streamed on YouTube, and fans will be able to submit questions about the actors, the film, and Schlesinger, their musical collaborator. All proceeds from the That Thing You Do! live stream will go to the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund, a fundraiser operated by the Recording Academy.
Hanks’ 1996 music comedy follows a one-hit wonder group from the 1960s as they attempt to capitalize on their viral earworm. Schlesinger collaborated with stars and producers on the film’s title song, “That Thing You Do,” which earned him an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination. According to Deadline, Hanks has not yet committed to the livestream watch party, but he has continued to pay his respects to Schlesinger over the past two weeks.
Schlesinger, 51, died of COVID-19 complications on April 1. He was best known for co-founding band Fountains of Wayne and for his work as an executive music producer on The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Schlesinger won countless awards throughout his career, including a Grammy for A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! and three Emmys for his work as a Tony Awards songwriter and on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal.”
The Wonders’ That Thing You Do watch party will go live this Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. It will be available to stream on YouTube.
