‘The Eddy’: Damien Chazelle Brings Crime, Drama and Music to Netflix In The First Trailer

The Oscar-winning director of La La Land is back, this time with a new musical series for Netflix. The trailer for Damien Chazelle‘s upcoming show The Eddy was released today, and it’s full of music, romance and drama. The Eddy follows Elliot Udo (André Holland), a jazz club owner in Paris who has to balance his life and career when his teenage daughter Julie (Amandla Stenberg) unexpectedly shows up and his business takes an unexpected turn.

Today’s trailer gives a glimpse at the struggles Elliot is facing with his club, The Eddy. After leaving his life as a successful jazz musician in New York City,  he’s now in Paris trying to manage his failing jazz club. His business partner, Farid (Tahar Rahim), has gotten involved in a business deal with some criminals and now both Farid and Elliot are in debt to the wrong type of people. “I can’t tell the police,” Elliot says in the trailer. “They’ll shut us down.” On top of his business troubles, Elliot is juggling a complicated romantic relationship with Maja (Joanna Kulig), the lead singer in the house band at his club, and trying to parent his 15-year-old daughter.

The eight-part series was written by Jack Thorne, who also wrote the scripts for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and His Dark Materials. Along with his role as Elliot, Holland will act as an co-executive producer with Chazelle on the upcoming series. Because it takes place in Paris, The Eddy features both English and French dialogue, as well as some Arabic (there are subtitles available for viewing), and will premiere on Netflix worldwide.

The Eddy comes to Netflix May 8. You can watch the full trailer above.
