Netflix Releases ‘Nerdy, Extra Thirsty’ Trailer For Mindy Kaling Coming-of-Age Comedy

We’ve seen Mindy Kaling as Kelly Kapoor on The Office, as Dr. Mindy Lahiri on The Mindy Project and as Audra on The Morning Show. And now, we’ll see what she was like before she became a famous actress. The comedian is digging into her past for her latest project, a coming-of-age series based on her own upbringing as a Hindu teen in Concord, Massachusetts. Netflix just released the trailer for her new show, Never Have I Ever, this afternoon. Kaling’s teen comedy follows Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), “an overachieving high school sophomore who has a short fuse that gets her into difficult situations.”

In today’s trailer, Devi declares to her friends, “Sophomore year is going to be our year. I can feel it.” To accomplish this, she’s decided that they’re all “rebranding” by dating peers who will add to their social status. They’re all on a mission to lose their virginity, and Devi has a plan for how it’ll all play out. “Buckle up for some steamy teen romance,” she teases.

Ramakrishnan landed the role of Devi when Kaling hosted an open casting call, and Never Have I Ever marks her acting debut. Kaling will serve as the show’s co-executive producer along with Lang Fisher, Never Have I Ever‘s showrunner and writer, who also worked on The Mindy Project.

“[Never Have I Ever] is similar to my other work because Maitreyi is a big comedy character with an unusual personality,” Kaling told Decider in September, “but also deals with the emotional fallout of death and trauma. Lang and I have both dealt with that personally and wondered why we hadn’t seen that in shows before.”

Never Have I Ever comes to Netflix April 27. You can watch the full trailer above.
