‘Sesame Street’ Partners with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anne Hathaway for Virtual Playdate

Elmo is bringing kids together during these uncertain times. On Tuesday night, WarnerMedia networks aired new special Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate, an at-home event aimed at connecting families amid the coronavirus crisis. Celebrities including Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anne Hathaway joined forces with the Sesame Street gang for a “virtual playdate” that featured singalongs, games, and even a baking lesson with Cookie Monster. Until he ate the recipe, that is.

Last night, WarnerMedia took advantage of HBO’s deal with Sesame Workshop to air Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate across all of its television networks, including HBO, TNT, TruTV, and Cartoon Network. The half-hour event followed Elmo’s friends and family (including his dad, who recently released a PSA urging parents to take a moment for themselves) as they experimented with new ways to learn and have fun while social distancing. The only rule? Whenever the horn sounds, viewers had to do “a silly dance.” Elmo knows how to get down!

Elmo’s dad wasn’t the only surprise guest in the Sesame Street special: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anne Hathaway, and Tracee Ellis Ross also called in to share their self-quarantine tips. Miranda and Hathaway led singalongs of “Old McDonald Had a Farm” and “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes,” respectively,” while Ross played a game of “Elmo Says” with the show’s star. At the end of the special, every Sesame Street character and guest star appeared in a Zoom-style conversation for a final performance of “Sing a Song.”

Viewers of all ages seemed to love the Muppets’ virtual playdate, and many praised the special for providing a ray of light in an otherwise dark time. “This was super fun,” tweeted one viewer. “Please have another one soon!” added another parent.

If you missed Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate the first time around, you can stream it on HBO Now, HBO Go, HBO On Demand, and partner networks’ streaming platforms. The special will also be available on HBO Max when the service launches in May.
