Disney is giving stir-crazy fans a little bit of hope this weekend. On Friday night, Broadway Cares and Playbill will be live streaming the Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway concert in order to raise money for those affected by coronavirus. The special concert will feature performances from dozens of beloved Disney Broadway musicals, including The Lion King, Frozen, Hercules, and more. As far as 25th anniversary specials go, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway was initially filmed in November 2019 as a fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, but the nonprofit has since enhanced it to reflect our new normal. The live streamed event will be hosted by Frozen star Ryan McCartan from his family’s basement and will feature real-time interviews with Disney on Broadway stars, also at home.

Intercut with these interviews will be pre-taped performances from 79 different Broadway performers, including Gavin Creel (Hello, Dolly!, Waitress), Whoopi Goldberg, Christian Borle (Little Shop of Horrors, Mary Poppins), Jelani Alladin (Hercules), and more. Disney on Broadway was initially slated to stream online this past Monday, April 13, but a dispute with the American Federation of Musicians unions pushed it to tonight, April 17. The event will be entirely free to stream, but viewers will be encouraged to make donations to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund, which helps actors and behind-the-scenes industry members affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“There is no better news today than that which helps us ensure all in the entertainment industry who are facing the serious challenges of this COVID-19 pandemic can depend on the support of all their colleagues in the industry,” said Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola in a statement. “My thanks to the leadership of the American Federation of Musicians. My best wishes and many thanks to AFM Local 802 President Adam Krauthamer and the Local 802 membership who were willing to speak up during this unprecedented time to support the arts community and those in need.”
