Netflix Released Ava DuVernay’s ‘13th’, ‘Our Planet’, And More Documentaries Free to Watch on Youtube

Netflix is stepping up to help teachers who are educating their students virtually during the coronavirus pandemic. The streaming service just released 10 documentaries and shows on its Netflix Youtube channel for educators to use for free in their teaching. Although Netflix previously allowed teachers to use its content in classrooms, the company decided to release free content on Youtube now that schools are closed and teachers have been requesting access from home, the company explained in a blog post.

The 10 free titles include Ava DuVernay’s 13tha film about the American prison industry and mass incarceration of people of color; Chasing Coral, a documentary about climate change and the impact on coral reefs; and Babies, a series about the science of the first year of life and the infant mind.

“We hope this will, in a small way, help teachers around the world,” Netflix stated on the company’s blog. Along with the free content, Netflix will also be providing educational materials, like study guides and discussion questions, to accompany each film or show. They’ll also be adding behind-the-scenes information from the people who worked behind the documentaries. “We’ll be doing Q&As with some of the creators behind these projects so that students can hear from them firsthand,” the company shared.

Here is the full list of educational films and shows being offered by Netflix for free on Youtube:

If you’re an educator and want to use the accompanying Netflix questions and study guides, you can find them with the Netflix blog post. You can start watching all of the free documentaries and shows right now in a playlist on the Netflix Youtube channel.
