Zac Efron Didn’t Sing in the ‘High School Musical’ Singalong Due to “Patchy WiFi”

“This is not what I want! This is not what I planned! And I just gotta say, I do not understand!”

On Thursday night, dozens of Disney stars reunited for The Disney Family Singalong, a virtual event aimed at connecting housebound viewers through song. For many, the highlight of the evening was the special’s High School Musical takeover, which reunited fans with stars Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and more. While it was a pretty big deal to snag Efron for the reunion, when it came time to actually sing, the star was M.I.A. What gives?

After making its way through Disney musical classics like “Colors of the Wind” and The Jungle Book‘s “I Want To Be Like You,” the Disney Family Singalong finally made its way into the 21st century. Towards the end of the broadcast, host Ryan Seacrest introduced the highly-anticipated High School Musical reunion, featuring the franchise’s OG stars and director Kenny Ortega performing the movie’s greatest hits. Since the event was first announced last week, the stars have been teasing Efron’s involvement in the special, but when it finally came time for him to show face, it was quite a letdown.

“Just when you thought we couldn’t give you any more feels, I have a surprise for you,” said Seacrest. “This star is hunkered down in the middle of nowhere with patchy WiFi, but he did not want to miss out on tonight.”

Efron then appeared via video, which, to his credit, was actually pretty grainy. “It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends, and some new ones,” said the star. “I hope that you enjoy, and remember, we are all in this together.” And… that was it. So much for an encore performance of “Get’cha Head in the Game.”

As you can imagine, viewers were pretty disappointed in Efron’s brief Disney Family Singalong cameo. “Finding out Zac Efron didn’t sing with the rest of the cast is just yet another major fuck you from 2020,” wrote one fan. “You couldn’t sing on a HSM Zoom call??? Excuse you sir,” said another.

Patchy WiFi or not, Zac Efron probably could have found a way to sing at least one song with his HSM co-stars. If Troy Bolton can make his basketball championship game and his callback audition in the same hour, so can Efron.

The Disney Family Singalong is now streaming on Hulu.
