HBO Max Officially Launches May 27

HBO Max, welcome to the world. This morning, WarnerMedia finally announced the official launch date for its new streaming service HBO Max. The highly-anticipated service, which will be the exclusive streaming home of Friends, will be available to U.S. customers on Wednesday, May 27 for $14.99/month, the same price as standalone streaming platform HBO Now.

According to Variety, WarnerMedia announced the May 27 launch date in a new series of ads that began running Tuesday morning. The ads also touted the platform’s tagline, “Where HBO meets so much more.”

While Friends is undoubtedly the prized gem of HBO Max’s library, the platform will also boast more than 10,000 hours of programming culled from WarnerMedia’s many properties. In addition to all nine seasons of Friends, HBO Max subscribers will have access to licensed sitcoms including The Big Bang Theory and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the entire DC Comics library from the past decade, Originals like the Gossip Girl reboot and Americanah, and much, much more. At its launch, WarnerMedia will only be offering HBO Max at a single $14.99/month price point. However, at a presentation in October 2019, WarnerMedia and AT&T execs revealed that they plan to release an ad-supported version of HBO Max within the next year. The company also plans to eventually bundle live sports and news in the service, but those features will not be available at launch.

If you already subscribe to HBO Now directly through HBO, you’re in luck: subscribers will get access to HBO Max on May 27 at no additional cost. AT&T TV and Charter Communications customers with HBO subscriptions will also be automatically upgraded to HBO Max at no additional cost.

HBO Max will be available through a variety of major devices, including Amazon Fire devices, Apple TV, and Roku Channels. Subscribers can also access HBO Max content on iPhone and Android devices, as well as computers and tablets.
