Two Women Reveal Their Six-Decade Relationship in ‘A Secret Love’ Trailer

After eight decades, Terry Donahue and Pat Henschel were finally able to tell the truth about their identities. Netflix’s upcoming documentary, A Secret Love, tells the story of the couple, who came out to their families at age 80 after being together for over 65 years. In a trailer released today, Netflix gives a preview at how the women met, the ways they kept their love hidden and how their family reacted to their relationship.

Donahue and Henschel first met in 1947, when 22-year-old Donahue was playing in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (which was later featured in A League of Their Own). The women had to keep their relationship secret, and conformed to the styles and conventions of the decade to hide their love. “We always wore dresses, makeup,” Donahue says in the trailer. “The whole thing. Anybody who was not gay, they simply didn’t know.”

The women’s family always thought of the two as longtime roommates and friends, until they made the choice to share their relationship. “All these years they’ve been together, and they’ve hid this secret from us,” a family member says. Donahue’s great-nephew Christopher Bolan was inspired to direct the film after Donahue and Henschel came out to him in 2009. “You kind of broke the rules your whole life,” he tells his great-aunt in the trailer. “That’s why I’m happy,” she replies. “No regrets. I’d do it all over again.”

A Secret Love comes from producer Ryan Murphy as part of his deal with Netflix, which includes 2019’s The Politician and upcoming projects Hollywood and The Boys in the Band. The new documentary has another famous name attached, too: executive producer Jason Blum, known for his horror powerhouse production company, Blumhouse (Get Out, Paranormal Activity).

A Secret Love comes to Netflix next Wednesday (April 29). Watch the full trailer in the video above.
