Woman Crush Wednesday: Golshifteh Farahani Will Captivate You in ‘Extraction’

We’ve reached the back half of April! I know that this may have felt like the longest month of some of our lives, but no need to fear, friends, because once again it’s time for the day that adds some extra excitement, insights, and fun to our lives. That’s right, today is once again, Hump Day, better known here at Decider as Woman Crush Wednesday! We’re shouting out an actress who has done great work all over the world, and if she isn’t on your radar yet, she should be now; Everybody give it up for the fantastic Golshifteh Farahani!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Golshifteh Farahani

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Farahani is portraying an arms dealer named Nik Khan in brand new action thriller film Extraction, which premieres on Netflix this Friday, April 24th. The film follows Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), a fearless black-market mercenary with nothing left to lose (and who also has a history with Farahani’s character), and whose skills are solicited to rescue Ovi (Rudraksh Jaiswal), the son of an imprisoned international crime lord who is kidnapped. What ensues is a deadly, life-altering, and seemingly impossible mission dealing with the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers. Extraction just may be the blockbuster of the summer, so enjoy Farahani’s great work from the comforts of home for a nice dose of action to spice up your life.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Farahani has taken over films and stages on an international level and from a very young age, with her film debut in 1997 when she was only 14 year-old when she starred as Mim (Mitra) in Iranian drama The Pear Tree (Derakht-e-Golabi), and for which she won the Simorgh Prize for Best Actress at the Fajr Film Festival. From there, she accrued a slew of impressive credits from around the globe, including Iranian films Half Moon (Niwemang), Mim Mesle Madar (M as in Mother), and About Elly (Darbareye Elly), French films To Each His Own Cinema, The Patience Stone, and Arab Blues, as well as American or English-speaking films like 2008 action thriller Body of Lies, 2012 drama Just Like A Woman, and 2014 political drama Rosewater. However, the two films for which Farahani is probably best known to an American audience are the beautiful 2016 drama Paterson (in which she plays Laura, the wife and muse of her bus-driving, poet husband Paterson, played by Adam Driver, in Paterson, New Jersey) and big-time 2017 swashbuckler fantasy blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (in which she plays sea witch Shansa). Farahani is a borderless talent and these are only a few of her many incredible, depth-filled past performances, and just a taste of the many great ones to come.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: While we aren’t sure what is next on the horizon for Farahani, you can at the very least keep up with her on Twitter and Instagram while you wait for the next chance to see her shine again on screens big and small.

Watch Extraction on Netflix.
