Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrapped up her Amazon comedy Fleabag for good last year, but she’s held onto an eye-catching prop from her successful series. The actress and producer appeared on The Graham Norton Show today and revealed that she’s been keeping the penis wall from the first season on full display at her home.
Fleabag fans will recognize the adult artwork from the Season 1 finale, when Fleabag’s Godmother (Olivia Colman) displays the piece as part of her Sexhibition. Now, it’s featured casually in Waller-Bridge’s hallway. “They’re all here keeping me company,” she told Norton.
Waller-Bridge explained that the phallic wall ended up in the entrance to her home because she couldn’t figure out a better spot for it. “Putting it in the kitchen felt too intense and putting it in one of the bedrooms can never go down well,” she said. Fair enough, but the hallway solution apparently has its own drawbacks — somehow, the wall has seemingly melted into the background and Waller-Bridge doesn’t even think of it anymore.
“You know when you put something down in your house and then you don’t think about it for ages, and then it just becomes invisible to you? And you forget that you have like 12 massive penises at your front door?” Totally relatable.
Obviously, the penis wall isn’t really invisible to everyone, and Waller-Bridge had a rather awkward reminder when a delivery man came to drop off a package. “He had to kind of bring something in and he was like knocking against the cocks as he was coming in,” she explained. “I was like, ‘Oh god, I’m so sorry.’ And he just looked me dead and the eye and he went, ‘It’s art. Never apologize for art.’ That was such a cool move from him.”
Once the coronavirus shutdown lifts and she goes back to her office, Waller-Bridge is planning to move the artwork from her home to her workplace. “I’m hoping it will eventually become a hat stand or something adorable like that,” she said. Amazing, it has both form and function!
