Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Audra McDonald in Sondheim’s 90th Birthday Concert are a Whole Quarantine Mood

Meryl Streep: she’s just like us. Last night, the Mamma Mia! star donned her best bathrobe and poured an extra large martini for the Stephen Sondheim 90th birthday concert, hosted by Broadway.com. Thanks to some assistance from Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald, Streep’s alcohol-fueled rendition of “The Ladies Who Lunch” immediately went viral, and for good reason: what’s better than three bathrobe-wearing legends drunkenly singing Sondheim?

On Sunday night, Broadway.com and YouTube teamed up to broadcast Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration, a star-studded tribute to the Company composer. The star-studded affair featured performances from dozens of artists, including Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and more, all of whom performed their favorite Sondheim hits. While the Sondheim 90th birthday concert — which also coincided with the 50th anniversary of Company‘s opening night on April 26, 1970 — was free to watch, viewers were encouraged to donate to Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP), a nonprofit aimed at helping industry members in need.

But even amid all this amazing talent, it was Streep, Baranski, and McDonald who stole the show. Towards the end of the two-and-a-half hour Broadway.com Sondheim tribute, the trio took on “The Ladies Who Lunch,” originally performed by Company‘s Elaine Stritch. Streep, for her part, belted out the song’s second verse as she shook a glass cocktail shaker, while Baranski and McDonald guzzled wine and whiskey, respectively, throughout the performance.

Streep, Baranski, and McDonald’s boozy performance of “The Ladies Who Lunch” captivated viewers, who immediately took to Twitter to praise the trio. “Meryl Streep being the perfect quarantine meme,” wrote one fan alongside a GIF of Streep uncorking yet another bottle. “Christine Baranski, Meryl Streep & Audra McDonald singing ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ is gay rights I don’t make the rules,” tweeted another.
