The Last Kingdom Season 4 finally dropped on Netflix over the weekend, which means there’s been time to binge all the way through the 10 new episodes. Oh yes, we spent our Sunday watching the great Uhtred of Babbenburg (Alexander Dreymon) fight his way through new enemies, and we want more. The question is…will Netflix make The Last Kingdom Season 5?

The Last Kingdom is an epic Dark Age saga set during one of the most turbulent times in British history: the reign of Alfred the Great and the generations after. During this time, England was split into a number of rival kingdoms, some lead by native Christian Saxons and others by invading Danes, aka Vikings. The Last Kingdom looks at this fraught moment through the eyes of a Saxon nobleman named Uhtred of Babbenberg. As a boy, he was “adopted” by Danish invaders and has become a man who is torn between the two cultures.

The first season of The Last Kingdom aired stateside on BBC America. Season 2 became a co-production of the BBC and Netflix, and when the BBC declined to renew it, Netflix took over as sole producer. So Netflix clearly thinks the series appeals to its subscribers, but does Netflix like the show enough to renew it for a fifth season? Here’s everything we know so far about The Last Kingdom Season 5 on Netflix.

IS NETFLIX MAKING THE LAST KINGDOM SEASON 5?

As of July 7, 2020, we can confirm that YES, there will be a fifth season of The Last Kingdom. The news was announced via an adorable YouTube video showing star Alexander Dreymon calling the cast of The Last Kingdom up on video chat to share the news.

TLK has been picked up for another season,” Dreymon told the over-the-moon excited cast.

Eliza Butterworth who plays the dowager queen Aelswith joked, “The party bus is rolling! The party bus is rolling!”

“Thank Netflix and our fans for that,” Dreymon told his cast buddies.

Now what’s interesting is who was on the call and who wasn’t. Series lead Millie Brady who plays the Lady Aethelflaed wasn’t in the video, but the likes of Ruby Hartley, who plays Uhtred’s daughter Stiorra, Stefanie Martini, who plays Eadith, and even Magnus Bruun, who plays Cnut, were on the line. What does it all mean?

Well, the only person on the call they made a note would not be back for The Last Kingdom Season 5 was Magnus Bruun, whose character was killed last season. That means Eliza Butterworth’s Aelswith might yet pull through her poisoning and Stiorra may not be off with Sigtryggr forever. While we shouldn’t read too much into the actors’ availability, Uhtred broke it off with Aethelflaed at the end of The Last Kingdom Season 4. In the books, his next flame would be Eadith…even though she seems to have some kind of flirtation going on with his best friend in the show. Hmm..

WHEN WILL THE LAST KINGDOM SEASON 5 HIT NETFLIX?

If Netflix does order a fifth season of The Last Kingdom, it will likely take about 18 months to produce a new season. That’s going off how long it took Netflix to make The Last Kingdom Seasons 3 & 4. That means that you could expect The Last Kingdom Season 5 in November or December of 2021. Of course, production might be delayed because…looks around at the state of the world…but Holiday Season 2021 feels like a decent bet.
