‘Downton Abbey’ Virtual Castle Tour up For Auction in Sotheby’s Charity Event

Bored in quarantine? How’s touring a 19th century British castle sound? Yes, we know travel isn’t exactly an option right now, but Downton Abbey fans now have the chance to win a virtual trip and tour of the Highclere Castle in Hampshire country, England.

The Downton Abbey tour is one of many prizes up for auction in the Mayday COVID-19 Charity Auction, a Sotheby’s and Google upcoming virtual auction. The companies are pairing up to raise money for International Rescue Committee foundation to help out during the coronavirus pandemic. The auction, which has a large selection of virtual celebrity meetups, begins Friday (May 1) at 2/1c and ends next week on May 8.

The lucky winner of the Downton Abbey auction will get to hop on a Google Meet video call with Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey creator, who will take them through Highclere Castle and act as a personal tour guide. Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey‘s Earl and Countess of Grantham) will also join in on the tour.

“Sotheby’s has a long tradition of supporting charitable organizations in times of need,” said Charles F. Stewart, CEO of Sotheby’s, in a statement Monday. “We are proud to bring our centuries of experience and the power of our online auctions to bear against the impact of COVID-19.”

Other charity experiences up for auction include singing with Sting, an acting lesson from Sir Patrick Stewart and coffee with Hillary Clinton. All lots in the auction are are transferable and shareable, so winners can keep their experience all to themselves, or share it with a lucky friend, family member or whoever they like.
