‘Jeopardy’ Contestant Mixes Up Janet Jackson and Ariana Grande in Embarrassing Flub

What is, a total Jeopardy disaster? On Wednesday night, contestant Alwin Hui became the butt of the joke when he mixed up Janet Jackson and Ariana Grande — after seeing a video of the youngest Jackson sibling performing “Nasty.” Jeopardy fans and music lovers alike had a field day with the flub, with many lamenting that it’s been quite “a strange week” on the beloved game show. That it has, that it has.

Last night, the Billboard Music Awards took over Jeopardy with a first-round category. Hui, a consultant from Washington, D.C., confidently selected the $800 clue, but maybe he should have rethought that one. “As the recipient of the 2018 Icon Award, she took ‘Control’ and took to the stage in her first live TV performance in nearly a decade,” read host Alex Trebek. If that wasn’t clear enough, the clue even came with a short video of Jackson’s 2018 Billboard Music Awards performance. Easy, right?

Lol, obviously not. “Who is Ariana Grande?” guessed Hui. Sir, what?! Sure, Jackson was wearing a high ponytail, oversized sweatshirt, and thigh-high boots, but would it really be possible for Ariana Grande to win the Icon Award at just 25 years old? No way.

Three-day winner Sarah Jett Rayburn — who derailed the competition earlier this week when she attempted to explain her wrong Final Jeopardy answer — then buzzed in with the correct answer: “Who is Janet Jackson?” She may not know the difference between Chaka Khan and Shaka Zulu, but at least she knows something about music.

Of course, Jeopardy viewers weren’t too kind about Hui’s Janet Jackson-Ariana Grande mix-up. “What world IS THIS?!” asked one fan. “No he didn’t! He thought JANET JCKSON was Ariana Grande?!!” wrote another. “Janet Jackson is a living legend sir!” said another.

Hui’s flub cost him $800, but despite staying competitive through the rest of the game, he ended up falling to Rayburn in Final Jeopardy. Rayburn is now the show’s four-day winner, with a grand total of $89,300.
