Quibi Makes Three Titles Free to Watch on YouTube

Less than a month after it first launched, mobile streaming service Quibi is making some of its content free to watch outside of the app. The platform has now posted the first episodes of three of its series on YouTube for anyone to view.

Initially released as a subscription-based service for people to watch on-the-go, Quibi is opening up some of its content library online. Quibi confirmed today that the first episodes of The Stranger, Most Dangerous Game and Anna Kendrick’s comedy Dummy are currently free on YouTube, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The Stranger, which has a nine-minute pilot episode, is a thriller about a ride-share gone wrong starring Maika Monroe as Clare, a driver who unknowingly picks up a killer in her car and has to fight for survival. Most Dangerous Game, Quibi’s most-watched series so far, is based on the short story by Richard Connell and stars Liam Hemsworth. Dummy, the third Quibi show on YouTube, follows a woman who befriends her boyfriend’s sex doll and takes her on an adventure. The full episodes of each show — all under 10 minutes — are available on the Quibi YouTube channel in both landscape mode (horizontally, like traditional YouTube videos) and portrait mode, which allows the viewer to watch the video vertically like they would on a phone screen.

Quibi has timed the release of the episodes on YouTube with the final day that people can sign up for a 90-day free trial of their service. Beginning Friday (May 1), the free trial period for new Quibi subscribers will be two weeks instead of the initial 90-day offer.

Quibi launched in April while most of the country was under shelter-in-place orders during the coronavirus pandemic. They recently announced a move to include TV casting as part of their services as well, since subscribers staying at home don’t need a mobile option as much right now.
