Actor Sam Lloyd has died at the age of 56, The Wrap reports. Lloyd was known for playing the lawyer Ted Buckland on the medical comedy Scrubs, one of many roles during his decades-long career. Lloyd was was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and lung cancer last year. His agent confirmed the actor’s death to The Wrap today.

During his time on Scrubs, Lloyd appeared in 95 episodes of the series, and briefly reprised his character from the show on the Courteney Cox sitcom Cougar Town. In total, Lloyd had over 60 credits across his 30-year acting career. He first began working as a stage actor, and made the transition to the screen with his role in NBC’s Night Court in 1988. Lloyd later appeared in shows like Desperate Housewives, Happy Together, Shameless, Modern Family, Spin City and Seinfeld, and in the films Galaxy Quest and Flubber. Lloyd was also a musician, and showed off his skills on Scrubs.

Zach Braff paid tribute to his Scrubs costar on Twitter this evening, calling him “one of the funniest actors I’ve ever had the joy of working with.” “Sam Lloyd made me crack up and break character every single time we did a scene together,” Braff wrote. “He could not have been a kinder man. I will forever cherish the time I had with you, Sammy.”

Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence also posted his memories of Lloyd on Twitter. “Thinking a lot about Sam Lloyd today. (Ted),” he wrote. “Truly such a kind, sweet guy. He will be missed by so many.”

Lloyd was diagnosed with a trumor last year shortly after he and his wife Vanessa welcomed their son, Weston, according to a GoFundMe set up for Lloyd after his diagnosis. In March, organizer Tim Holbert (Scrubs executive producer) posted an update on Lloyd’s treatment, which had begun to lose effectiveness. The producer added that despite his illness, Lloyd had “made the most of the time that he has been given.”
