‘DC’s Stargirl’: Meet The Injustice Society In This Exclusive Promo

“None of you are good with names, huh?” jokes Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) to her step-dad Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) towards the end of this exclusive look at The CW’s upcoming DC’s Stargirl. But the bad guys of The Injustice Society are no joke, as the titular superhero-in-training Stargirl will find out, when the series debuts later this month.

Based on the DC Comics character created by writer Geoff Johns  — who also created the TV series, which will air on both The CW and DC Universe — and artist Lee Moder, Stargirl is a plucky, younger hero; not the grim Green Arrow of Star City, or Gotham’s Batwoman. But that doesn’t mean the threats she faces won’t be big and bad. And in some cases, extremely big, as you can see in the promo.

“Ten years ago, Starman and the JSA died saving the world,” Dugan says in voiceover. “The Flash, Doctor Fate… They couldn’t defeat The Injustice Society.”

In the comic books, the Justice Society of America — a.k.a. The JSA — is a group of veteran superheroes that pre-dates the more popularly known Justice League, though they do include some relatively familiar names in their ranks. That includes The Flash, though not Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) from The CW television show, and Green Lantern. But it also includes other, lesser known (to non-comic book fans) heroes like Doctor Fate, Doctor Mid-Nite, and Wildcat, as well as Starman, played on TV by none other than Joel McHale.

For every superhero team, though, there are their opposites. In this case that’s the Injustice Society, who will crop up again to menace Courtney in her new guise as Stargirl. As teased in the promo, they include: Brainwave (Christopher James Baker), who has serious mind powers; Tigress (Joy Osmanski), a deadly fighter; Wizard (Joe Knezevich), who uses magic, but you figured that out; the hulking, horrifying Solomon Grundy; Icicle (Neil Jackson), who has ice powers, natch; Dragon King (Nelson Lee); and, no joke, Sportsmaster (Neil Hopkins), who, uh, plays sports.

And sure some of them might seem less than terrifying, but I’ll refer you back to the whole “killing the JSA” thing… Courtney is going to have her work cut out for her.

Watch the promo above for more, and you can check out the series when it debuts on The CW on Tuesday, May 19 at 8/7c, and the next day on The CW website and app.
