‘The Mandalorian’ Casts Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett in Season 2

The Mandalorian is making dreams come true in Season 2. The latest dream? The return of Boba Fett, the most famous Mandalorian in the Star Wars galaxy (although technically Boba Fett probably isn’t a real Mandalorian but, like, details, details). The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Temuera Morrison has joined the cast of The Mandalorian Season 2 as Boba Fett, a major, major move for the hit Disney+ series. While the role is described by unnamed sources as just a small part, this is still a huge development considering it’s Boba f’ing Fett.

This won’t be Morrison’s first time under a Mandalorian helmet. Morrison previously played the bounty hunter Jango Fett in 2002’s Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. In that film, it was revealed that not only was Jango Fett the genetic template for all of the clone soldiers, but Boba Fett was actually an unaltered clone of Jango Fett. That’s why Morrison can play both “father” and “son”; Boba’s a clone of Jango.

This is also a big deal because The Mandalorian takes place after 1983’s Return of the Jedi, the film that sent badass bounty hunter Boba Fett careening clumsily into the open mouth of the Sarlacc pit on Tatooine. The Star Wars expanded universe has actually shown great restraint when it comes to Boba Fett since the canon was reset back in 2014; the popular character has not been used in a story set after Return of the Jedi for the past six years, meaning that Boba Fett is considered dead in canon right now. This will change that, as it will be Boba Fett’s first post-ROTJ appearance (as long as Morrison’s role isn’t in a flashback), and presumably will confirm once and for all that he’s not still slowly digesting in the belly of that beast.

It’s also worth pointing out that Fett’s involvement in The Mandalorian Season 2 could pick up on a loose end from the Season 1 episode, “The Gunslinger.” That episode ended with a still mysterious figure approaching the assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Was it Boba Fett? Time will tell!

The Mandalorian Season 2 is expected to debut on Disney+ in October 2020.
