‘Shirley,’ The Elisabeth Moss Shirley Jackson Biopic, Is Coming to Streaming Next Month

And now for some good news: The 2020 Sundance favorite Shirley will soon be available to stream on Hulu and more. Neon announced on Twitter today that the Shirley Jackson biopic starring Elisabeth Moss will be “everywhere” on June 5. I’ll repeat that for the people in the back: The Shirley release date, for on-demand, Hulu, and more, is June 5, 2020.

A Neon representative clarified to Decider that Shirley will be available to rent and buy on-demand on platforms (such as iTunes, Amazon Prime, Vudu, and Fandango Now), and will be on Hulu, Neon’s streaming partner. Though many theaters will likely still be closed by June 5 due to COVID-19, the film will also play in select drive-ins. The production company employed a similar release strategy for two recent documentaries, Spaceship Earth and The Painter and the Thief, but Shirley is Neon’s first narrative feature to be released this way.

Directed by Josephine Decker, who won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Auteur Filmmaking at Sundance in January, and adapted by Sarah Gubbins from a novel by Susan Scarf Merrell, Shirley and chronicles the creative process of the real-life American horror and mystery writer, Shirley Jackson. Unfortunately for the young couple (Logan Lerman and Odessa Young )who moves in with Jackson and her husband (Michael Stuhlbarg), Jackson’s creative process involves leeching off of their own psycho-drama. Oops.

Neon also released the first trailer for Shirley on Friday, which you can watch right here.

The film was highly praised by critics at Sundance Film Festival—it currently has a 97 percent on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes—so no doubt film lovers will be over the moon at the chance to stream it from their homes next month. I know that I personally cannot wait to watch Elisabeth Moss psychologically torture some people.

This is just the latest critically acclaimed film to hit Hulu thanks to Neon’s deal with the streaming service. Cinephiles can also catch the Best Picture winner Parasite and the epic love story, Portrait of a Lady on Fire on Hulu. Your move, Netflix.
