Netflix Teases ‘The Grudge’ Series With Chilling ‘Ju-On: Origins’ Trailer

A terrifying Japanese horror franchise is coming to Netflix. The trailer for Ju-On: Origins, an upcoming series on the streaming service, was released today, and it certainly looks scarier than the recent The Grudge remake. Netflix’s new Ju-On series goes back to the start of the Ju-On horror franchise, which first began with 2000’s Ju-On: The Curse.

Today’s trailer shows how the upcoming Netflix project explores the true story that inspired it all. There’s a creepy old house, some supernatural spirits, a couple alien-like babies and of course, blood. The new Ju-On adaptation stars Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, Yuina Kuroshima, and Ririka.

Ju-On: Origins‘ official description reads: “The J-Horror classic franchise Ju-On was actually based on real events that occurred over four decades – and the truth is even more terrifying. Can the people haunted by this house escape from its curse? And what kind of grim incident occurred in this cursed house in the past?”

The Netflix trailer looks similar to the original film, where a man murders his wife, son and family cat when he finds out his wife is in love with another man. The murders create a curse that goes on to haunt the house and its inhabitants for years to come, eventually consuming whoever it comes in contact with and pulling them in.

The Ju-On franchise includes 13 films in total. Since their debut in Japan, the Ju-On films have been remade for American audiences, with 2004’s The Grudge, 2006’s The Grudge 2 and 2009’s The Grudge 3, which went straight to video. A recent remake of the original The Grudge film was widely panned by audiences and has a 20 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the impressive number of films, Netflix’s upcoming series marks the first serialization in the Ju-On franchise.

Netflix’s Ju-On: Origins premieres July 3. Watch the full haunting trailer in the video above, but be warned: it just may leave you sleeping with the lights on tonight.
